In 2010, Canada's world-famous Whistler Blackcomb skiing area will become the Host Mountain Resort for the upcoming Vancouver Winter Olympics and Paralympics. Whistler has a long history of interest in the Winter Olympic Games and in 1968, made an unsuccessful bid for the event.

The following decade actually saw Whistler being offered the opportunity to host the 1976 games, after Denver dropped out of the running, although on this occasion the offer was declined, due to lack of support and funding, and these Winter Olympics ultimately took place in Innsbruck, Austria.




However, today things are quite different and preparations are already well underway for the 2010 Winter Olympic Games, with construction of the Whistler Olympic and Paralympic Village (Athlete's Village), capable of accommodating more than 2,000 athletes, already well in progress.

The 2010 games are also known as the 21st Winter Olympics (XXI Olympic Winter Games), with events being shared between Vancouver and Whistler Blackcomb. In Vancouver, the games will take place at venues such as the BC Place Stadium, the GM Place, the Hillcrest Park, the Pacific Coliseum and also the Vancouver Convention and Exhibition Centre, where figure skating, speed skating, curling and various ceremonies will be held.

At Whistler Blackcomb, the 2010 Olympic Games will including downhill and slalom skiing at Creekside, along with Nordic cross-country skiing, ski-jumping, all Paralympic events, and a biathlon competition at the Olympic Park's Callaghan Valley. The Whistler Sliding Centre will play host to bobsleigh and luge sledding events, while the medal presentation and the closing ceremony are to be held within the Whistler Celebration Site.
